Beeswax is the reason a balm is a balm. Take it out, and the olive oil and coconut oil would run right off your dry hands. So is beeswax good for your skin, or is it only there to hold the stick together?
The short answer: Beeswax is good for your skin. It lays a thin layer over the surface that slows water from leaving. Your skin keeps more of its own moisture, and it feels softer. It also gives a balm its shape, so the oils stay where you rub them. That is why it is in every balm I make.

The wax is what makes a balm a balm
I made my first balm for my own feet after obstacle races. Beeswax is what turns a pan of warm oils into a stick you can carry in a pocket. What I tell patients in clinic is simple. Dry skin is skin that loses water faster than it can hold it. A balm with beeswax slows that loss right where you rub it in. The beeswax studies are below.
What does beeswax do for your skin?
Beeswax lays a thin, breathable layer on the surface of your skin. That layer slows the water leaving, so your skin holds its own moisture.
A 2023 review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology looked at every beeswax study it could find. It found five. Two were in people. That is a small pile. The review says beeswax does three jobs. It slows water loss. It helps hold water in. And it softens and soothes the skin. The review's own words: more studies are needed. I agree. (Nong 2023)
One study used a cream made with tiny beeswax particles. After 28 days of use, skin held more water and lost less of it to the air. (Souza 2017)
So beeswax helps your skin keep the water it already has. The oils around it help with the softening. A balm is a team, and beeswax is the one holding the line.
Is beeswax good for dry skin?
Yes. Dry skin is losing water, and beeswax slows that loss.
The best study I found was done on 192 dental lab workers. Their hands take a beating all day. Each worker tried a barrier cream at work and a moisturizer at home. The home moisturizer made with beeswax won. 98 percent of the workers rated it good or very good. Their skin also lost less water through the surface than it did with the barrier cream. (Frosch 2003)
That is the timing I give patients. Night, after the hands have been in water all day. My name is Dr. Doug Strobel, MD. I am a board-certified neurologist, and I built our balms around beeswax on purpose. Original Miracle Balm is the one for dry skin. It is organic beeswax, organic olive oil, organic coconut oil and organic shea butter, with organic peppermint and lavender essential oils and vitamin E. Seven ingredients, six of them certified organic. Hands, heels, elbows, knuckles. Cracked heels? Rub it in at night and put on socks if you can.
Is beeswax good for your lips?
Yes. Lips dry out fast, and beeswax is the reason a lip balm stays put.
A lip balm is mostly wax and oil. The wax holds the oil on your lips, so it lasts past the first cup of coffee. Our Lip Logic is built on the same short list: organic beeswax, organic olive oil, organic coconut oil and vitamin E, with organic peppermint and lavender essential oils in the Original. No petroleum and no synthetic fragrance. A little goes a long way. Put on a light layer and reapply when you need it.
Is beeswax ok for your face and sensitive skin?
For most people, yes. Beeswax is one of the oldest things people have put on their face, and most skin does fine with it.
A small number of people react to it. A 2019 study patch tested 95 people who already had trouble on their lips or face. 17 of them reacted to beeswax. (Nyman 2019) Those were people with a problem to begin with, so that number runs high. Still, if your skin is touchy, try a small spot on your inner arm first and wait a day.
People also ask about wrinkles and skin tightening. What beeswax does for your face is hold moisture in, and skin that holds moisture looks smoother. No study has tested beeswax for wrinkles. We don't know yet.
Organic beeswax or synthetic?
Organic. Real beeswax is a mix of more than 300 parts that bees make. (Huanbutta 2026) Synthetic beeswax is a lab-made wax built to act like it. Real beeswax can also be cut with paraffin, a petroleum wax, and the same review flags that as a quality concern. Certified organic beeswax has to meet a standard. That is the only kind we use.
What our customers say
"...every time I put it on I experienced truly all day moisture. ... They all claim to have long lasting moisture but only this one does it for me..." (Sarah R., verified buyer)
"This is a wonderful lip balm that glides on and keeps lips soft and hydrated. No odor and good staying power." (Diane B., verified buyer)
"I can reapply all day long and it doesn't clump and become a sticky mess on my lips." (Linda H., verified buyer)
Your plan: pick, rub, repeat
- Pick. Skin that is dry, rough or cracked gets Original Miracle Balm. Lips get Lip Logic.
- Rub. Start small. Massage it in until it disappears, the dry spot plus about 5 inches all the way around it. Still feel the oils? Use less next time. Not full coverage? Use a little more. The magic happens when you massage it in.
- Repeat. Make it a two-minute habit. Every night, and any time your hands have been in water or wind.
Two minutes at the sink before bed, and nothing is left on the doorknob or the sheets. The cold weeks come, and your hands stay your hands. By February the jar is the most stolen thing in the house.
